Overdesign: When Less Becomes More + Analytical
Like most designers, I like complex animations and bright colors. When talking about web design, I like minimalist design.
Less is more.
Especially when you are trying to deliver a complex message.
Sunsama is an excellent example of a website that knows that over-design is a slippery slope and keeps things simple.
Sunsama’s website could’ve taken a page off of Linear and displayed all the integrations and features of the app in eye-catching cards.
Instead, they went in the opposite direction. And it was the right choice.
The website is calming. When you consider the target, it is a hit.
Visual Design
I don’t know if the background is a gradient or a light purple solid, but it works wonders. It is more calming than 100% white, as it would be too bright.
Lately, most sites play with uncommon layouts. Sunsama doesn’t. It starts with a centered heading and a single CTA.
I especially like that it explains the 14-day trial. Letting your visitors chase important information is a waste of time and opportunity.
Instead of explaining each of the app features. It relies on reviews. Two birds, one stone: because it demonstrates social proof and the app’s benefits.
The whole website uses subtle animations - they are not needed, but they help to keep the site interesting.
There is one thing that confused me. All of the links in the nabber take you to another page - but these pages seem to be the homepage sections.
Overall, this is the perfect example of how less is more. Sunsama’s website is simple, but it needs not add complexity.
